Half a million people stranded. About 150 boats turned up.
Bridges and tunnels shut, and half a million people were stranded on the bottom of Manhattan. The Coast Guard asked on the radio for any available boat, and about 150 turned up - tugs, ferries, dinner cruises, a fishing charter that had been out since dawn. By evening they had moved around 500,000 people off the island. It was not planned, but people rallied around that moment to just do what was needed.
